After migrating one of our vaping sector client’s sites over to WooCommerce, we onboarded an age verification (AV) solution that had a native WooCommerce integration. About a week after pushing the AV solution live on the client’s site, we saw a sudden drop off in sales. We were pretty quickly able to identify that a fault in the AV solution meant that customers were not able to verify their ages, and were abandoning their purchases. As you can imagine, any negative impact on the customer experience means a negative impact on revenue.
Because of the legal requirement for age verification of vape sales in the UK, our client could not have their site live without a working solution. We needed an alternative and we needed it quickly. Our client had to shut down their site for six hours on the day we realised there was an issue, which you can imagine had a significant impact on sales. After a quick Google search and a comment on a Verifymy LinkedIn post, I was able to track down a member of the sales team and have them reach out to me directly.

Reputation in the vaping industry is extremely important. If your UX isn’t right and this impacts the customer’s shopping experience, they just don’t come back. As most eCommerce sites are built on WooCommerce it was imperative that the integration made the sales process as friction-free as possible.

What stood out to me was the backend of the Verifymy WooCommerce plugin. When the order comes through, you can see immediately if it’s been verified or not. This is great for our clients with smaller shops, especially if they don’t have an order management system. The Verifymy plugin allows them to easily see if verification has been successful and whether or not they can go ahead and fulfil the order. It was also really cool for me to see the post-sale communication that gets sent to customers, reminding them to verify their age so they can have their order shipped.

What’s most impressive is that I was able to set up the plugin, test and push it live within minutes. Our previous AV solution would not allow me to follow the age verification process and see where the failure was. But upon implementing the Verifymy solution I was able to see where verification had failed, was pending and when it succeeded.

They were phenomenal. The quality of communication and sincerity from the team was stand out. Incidentally on the day I reached out to Verifymy, not only had we shut down our client’s site, but there was also no power in South Africa (where I’m based). In the midst of everything going wrong, the team really came to the rescue. They were kind enough to keep me posted via WhatsApp as we started switching over, right through to 10 o’clock at night, when we went live.
